This hill top garden is rather like a very delicious box of chocolates, so full of different treats that it is hard to know which one to pick first. You could, for instance, be torn between the Millennium pond garden which links the terrace by the house to rest of the garden, and the gravel garden.
Framed in Liscannor stone surrounded by raised beds filled with hydrangeas and dwarf rhododendrons, the formal pond harbours water lilies, Iris ensataand a cast iron sculpture of arum lilies. The exit to the lower garden is guarded by two dramatic columns of restios and the bank below is turned brilliant pink by nerines in autumn.
In contrast to the hard landscaping, the gravel garden shimmers with swaying grasses, Verbena bonariensis, Diarama ‘Blackbird’ and bearded iris in late spring. Beyond this hot dry area, emerald green lawns lap around informal beds of mixed planting where contrasting forms and colours of shrubs act as the backdrop for the star performers out front.
Created over two generations by the late Mrs Margaret Cross and her son Brian, the garden is so cleverly planned with constant changes of mood and style that it seems much larger than two acres. There’s an almost Californian brilliance to a side garden where the azure of the pool is offset by bright flowered azaleas, rhododendrons and primulas.
The paved garden, its seclusion emphasised by wrought iron gates, contains a number of separate compartments with raised beds for alpines and structural plants like phormiums and inviting seats. Tucked away beside a formal area with topiaried box and bay, the conservatory is full of tender treasures, the tree poppy Dendromecon rigida, abutilon,
pelargoniums and jasmine.
