This is a place with something for everyone, from preschool to retirement groups. Where else would you find a fairy ring, a magic tree, African Spotted Owls and a great collection of clematis and roses, all in the one spot? Pat Dillon has been gardening since he was a child which, combined with a farmer’s knowledge, makes for green fingers and practical tips he is happy to share.
The garden flows informally into different areas, a cottage garden, sweeping lawns with beds of roses and shrubs skirted in box, a tranquil damp garden where rogersias, primulas and hostas flourish. In addition there is a gravel garden planted with roses, clematis and cheerful dahlias, and a vegetable garden guarded by a turkey who gets very upset at the mention of Christmas.
In the heart of the plan is a white and silver summerhouse garden where curtains of R ‘Frances E. Lester’ hang from pergolas and C‘Paul Farges’ and R‘Francois Juranville’ have clambered up silver birches. Around the garden are eye-catching displays of clematis and roses, C ‘Prince Charles’, C Arabella, ‘Etoile Violette’, R‘Paul’s Himalayan Musk’ and ‘Felicité et Perpetue.’
For the adventurous there are encounters with furry friends from lion rabbits to lemurs in areas adjacent to the garden, and walks with unexpected creatures like emus, leading to paddocks and to picnic spots. Altogether a great place for a family outing.
